Generating Your First Document

Follow these 5 simple steps to create your first compliance document:

Step 1: Setup

Enter basic information about your document:

  • Organization Name: Your company or agency name
  • System Name: The IT system being documented
  • Document Type: Choose from Policy, Procedures, SSP, Evidence, or Assessment
  • Control Family: Select which NIST 800-53 family (e.g., Access Control)
  • Baseline Level: Choose Low, Moderate, or High based on your system's impact level

Step 2: Answer Questions

Complete the questionnaire about your organization and systems. Questions are tailored to the control family you selected.

Step 3: Preview

Review a preview of your generated document showing 25% of the content visible. This lets you evaluate quality before purchasing.

Step 4: Purchase

Choose your purchase option (single document, family bundle, or subscription) to unlock the full document.

Step 5: Download

Download your complete document as a Word file. You can edit, customize, and brand it with your organization's logo.

Understanding the Questionnaire

The questionnaire is how AMIDS Scribe learns about your organization to generate tailored documents. Here's what to expect:

Scoping Questions

Determine which controls apply to your system. Answer these first to filter out irrelevant questions.

Technical Questions

Capture details about your environment, tools, and processes used to implement controls.

Look for the "?" icons next to questions for helpful explanations of what each question means and why it matters.

Time estimate: Plan for 15-30 minutes per control family to answer the questionnaire thoughtfully. Better answers = better documents.

Previewing Documents

Before purchasing, you can preview any document to evaluate its quality and relevance.

How Preview Works

  • 25% visible: See the document structure, formatting, and sample content
  • 75% blurred: Remaining content is blurred until purchase
  • 1 free preview per document type per day: Try different document types to find what you need

After purchase, you'll see 100% of the document and can download it as a fully editable Word file.

Document Types

AMIDS Scribe generates five types of compliance documents, each serving a different purpose in your NIST 800-53 compliance program.

Security Policies

WHAT you must do

Policies are high-level organizational documents that describe your commitment to security controls. They establish the rules and requirements your organization will follow.

Includes:

  • • Purpose and scope statements
  • • Roles and responsibilities
  • • Policy statements for each control
  • • Compliance requirements
  • • Review and update schedules

Example:

"Access Control Policy" defines who can access systems, how access is granted/revoked, and what authentication methods are required.

AI Completion: 85-95% complete. You'll customize naming conventions and references to existing policies.

Procedures

HOW to do it

Procedures are step-by-step operational documents that explain how to implement the controls defined in your policies. They're the practical "how-to" guides for your team.

Includes:

  • • Step-by-step instructions
  • • Tool-specific guidance
  • • Decision trees and workflows
  • • Checklists for operators
  • • Escalation procedures

Example:

"Account Provisioning Procedure" walks through each step to create a new user account, from request submission to final verification.

AI Completion: 80-90% complete. You'll add tool names, URLs, and role titles specific to your organization.

SSP Sections

WHERE controls are implemented

System Security Plan (SSP) sections document how controls are specifically implemented in your system. These are the detailed technical descriptions auditors review.

Includes:

  • • Control implementation statements
  • • System-specific details
  • • Responsible parties
  • • Implementation status
  • • Control inheritance information

Example:

"AC-2 Account Management" SSP section describes exactly how your system manages user accounts, including tools used and automation in place.

AI Completion: 75-85% complete. You'll add system boundaries, inherited controls, and specific network details.

Evidence Checklists

PROOF for auditors

Evidence checklists help you identify and organize the artifacts you need to demonstrate compliance. Use these to prepare for audits.

Includes:

  • • Required evidence for each control
  • • Document types needed
  • • Screenshot requirements
  • • Log examples to collect
  • • Collection frequency guidance

Example:

Evidence checklist for "AU-6 Audit Review" lists log samples, review meeting minutes, and alert configurations you should have documented.

AI Completion: 90% complete. You may need to adjust tool-specific column headers.

Assessment Checklists

VERIFY controls work

Assessment checklists help you perform self-assessments to verify your controls are implemented correctly and operating effectively.

Includes:

  • • Assessment questions per control
  • • Pass/fail criteria
  • • Testing procedures
  • • Finding documentation space
  • • Remediation tracking

Example:

Assessment checklist for "IA-2 Identification and Authentication" includes tests to verify MFA is enabled and working correctly.

AI Completion: 90% complete. Minimal customization needed.

Your responses are saved and linked to your account

3

Reuse for New Documents

Click "Use for Generation" to create another document type with the same answers

Managing Saved Questionnaires

Access your saved questionnaires from the dashboard by clicking the "Questionnaires" card. From there you can:

  • Use for Generation: Generate a new document using saved answers
  • View Report: Generate a PDF report of all your answers (see Control Reports below)
  • Delete: Remove saved questionnaires you no longer need

Pro Tip: If you've purchased a Family Bundle, use saved questionnaires to quickly generate all 5 document types (Policy, Procedures, SSP, Evidence, Assessment) without re-answering questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AMIDS Scribe?

AMIDS Scribe is an AI-powered compliance documentation tool that generates customized NIST 800-53 policies, procedures, SSP sections, evidence checklists, and assessment checklists. It uses your answers about your organization to create tailored documents that are 80-90% audit-ready.

How does the preview work?

When you generate a document, you'll see a preview showing 25% of the content. This lets you evaluate the quality and relevance before purchasing. The full document is unlocked after purchase. You can preview one document type per day for free.

What are 'Reviewer Action' items?

Reviewer Action items are placeholders in generated documents where you need to add organization-specific information that we intentionally don't collect — things like IP addresses, system names, or internal URLs. This is a security feature to protect your sensitive data.

Will auditors accept AI-generated documents?

Yes. Our documents are grounded in authoritative NIST 800-53 source text and include review checklists. Auditors evaluate the content and accuracy of your documentation, not how it was initially drafted. You'll review and customize the documents before using them.

What's the difference between document types?

Policies describe WHAT you must do (high-level requirements). Procedures explain HOW to do it (step-by-step instructions). SSP Sections document WHERE controls are implemented (system-specific details). Evidence Checklists list PROOF needed for auditors. Assessment Checklists help you verify controls are working.

How many times can I regenerate a document?

Each purchase includes 3 generations per document — your initial generation plus two revisions if you want to update your answers and regenerate. Subscribers have unlimited regenerations within daily rate limits.

What control families are supported?

All 20 NIST 800-53 control families are supported: Access Control (AC), Awareness & Training (AT), Audit & Accountability (AU), Assessment, Authorization & Monitoring (CA), Configuration Management (CM), Contingency Planning (CP), Identification & Authentication (IA), Incident Response (IR), Maintenance (MA), Media Protection (MP), Physical & Environmental (PE), Planning (PL), Program Management (PM), Personnel Security (PS), PII Processing (PT), Risk Assessment (RA), System & Services Acquisition (SA), System & Communications Protection (SC), System & Information Integrity (SI), and Supply Chain Risk Management (SR).

Can I use this for FedRAMP or CMMC?

AMIDS Scribe currently focuses on NIST 800-53. Since FedRAMP and CMMC are based on NIST controls, our documents provide a strong foundation. Additional framework support is on our roadmap.
